Default Classic films in the public domain

Here at Americafree.tv, we are always on the lookout for copies of public domain classics.

Do you have a favorite classic film, that is in the public domain, and we aren't showing? If you do, and most especially if you know where we can get a copy of it, let us know.

Even if you don't know where to find a copy of it, feel free to share any requests you may have. But, please remember, we are interested in films that are in the public domain.

Some of you will ask: how do I know what films are in the public domain? Many will already have a pretty good idea the answer to this question, but for those who have no idea, this wikipedia article will point you in the right direction.

Default Kurosawa?

I think some of Kurosawa's are in PB. Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo.

They would be nice additions to the site here.

I looked into this, and I am not so sure. They are not carried by the usual PD shops, for example.

We would love to start carrying Japanese content - I have talked to people about setting up an Anime channel, for example, but with no luck so far.

If you know people in Japan who I could talk to about any Japanese content, I would be glad to do so.

Default Rashomon at google video

Rashomon is at Google video. It says public domain. I read on another site how all japanese pre '52 are public domain.

You are correct. I am looking into how to get Japanese movies from pre-1952, and also how to sub-title them.

(While the movie is PD, the subtitles applied by firms such as Criterion are not. So, we have to either find PD subtitles or make our own; the latter is not too hard to do.)

I think subtitles on Kurosawa films are the same age as the original print. Those are very old subtitles added when the film was exported to the U.S. So, they should be fine to keep. They may even have been added by Toho.

OK, I will look at one and see what they claim.

The bigger issue, of course, is not to get just one or two movies, but a whole range of Japanese PD films.
